There are many different questions you might encounter while you are cooking or baking. Here is a list of several different tips for common problems you might encounter during your years of cooking. You never know when you might need to try one of these things.Softening brown sugar
Have you ever needed brown sugar for a recipe, only to find that the only brown sugar you have is hardened? This has happened to almost all of us, but there is an easy way to soften the brown sugar if you find it this way. To soften it, place it in a small dish and microwave it for 30 seconds. This usually works well. You should also purchase a small terra cotta item and place it in your brown sugar container. I have used one of these for years and it keeps the brown sugar moist all the time.
Testing your baking powder
Baking powder is not an ingredient that is used often and therefore it is good to test it before using it. If it is no good, you should throw it away and buy a new box. Testing it is easy to do. You should take a cup of water and add 1 teaspoon baking powder to it. If it does not fizz, the baking powder is no good.
If you have ever added too much salt to something you are cooking, there is an easy solution that works well. Add a couple chunks of a chopped up potato to the pot of food you are cooking, or add a whole potato, peeled. The potato will soak up the salt and your dish will not taste so salty.
