Sometimes I like to try new recipes to see how they turn out. While they mostly turn out tasting like crap, sometimes they come out pretty good. Molasses Cake is a recipe from 1921 that I decided to make one day. It's fairly simple to make and doesn't require too many ingredients.
Molasses Cake
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup milk
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Cream shortening and make sure it doesn't have any lumps in it. Slowly add the sugar and keep beating. Beat the egg and add it to the mixture. Beat well and add the molasses.
Slowly add 1 cup of flour. Next add the baking powder, salt, allspice and cinnamon.
Finally add the milk and remainder of the flour. Mix well.
This recipe says "Bake in greased shallow pan in moderate oven about 45 minutes." Moderate oven is around 375 degrees.
This recipe is wonderful because as it was baking in the oven, it made the whole house smell like gingerbread. I ended up having to cook it longer than 45 minutes. I baked it for 1 hour and it came out nice and fluffy.
You can serve this cake with butter on top while it is still warm and it will gently melt the butter.
This is a good recipe to bake before guests come over because of the delicious aroma it gives the whole house.
